New Parallels Website, Logo Make Debut

Posted on February 1st, 2008 in Uncategorized

Parallels has begun implementing a descriptive product naming strategy so that, for example, SWsoft PEM and HSPcomplete are now called Parallels System Automation and Parallels Business Automation.

(MyHostNews.com) Parallels (formerly SWsoft) announced the transition to its new corporate name and made the debut of the new company website, www.parallels.com, along with its redesigned corporate logo.

Parallels has begun implementing a descriptive product naming strategy so that, for example, SWsoft PEM and HSPcomplete are now called Parallels System Automation and Parallels Business Automation. A list of product names is available at www.parallels.com/about/optimizedcomputing/naming.

These changes are part of the company’s Optimized Computing initiative announced in December, and its cornerstone the Parallels Open Platform which brings together desktop and server virtualization plus system and business automation assets in conjunction with a rapidly-expanding ecosystem of partner solutions for use in on-premise, hosted and software-as-a-service (SaaS) usage models.

Earlier this month, the company made available the beta version of Parallels Server, its hypervisor-powered server virtualization solution, as a complement to its Parallels Virtuozzo Containers 4.0 operating system (OS) server virtualization software made generally available today.

Partners can access new Parallels logos and artwork here, www.parallels.com/about/logosandartwork.

Hosting customers left to fend for themselves as attack levels rise

(Web Hosting News) Despite the highly publicized attacks on websites worldwide, many web hosting customers remain unprotected against the newest forms of attacks as cyber crime tactics evolve, says Applicure, a leading web application firewall specialist which protects hosting companies and their customers from incoming web server attacks.

Hundreds of thousands of web site operators - many with little or no technical expertise - rely on web hosting providers to keep their websites and web applications safe. Yet events such as the recent SQL injection attack that compromised more than 70,000 websites, and the 10,000 web sites serving up malicious code in December, show hackers are exploiting vulnerabilities in web applications with impunity.

The combination of traditional firewall technology becoming mainstream and enterprise networks improving their defenses has driven hackers to find more vulnerable targets.

Yaacov Sherban, CEO of Applicure, commented: ‘Popular entry routes for attacks now focus on web applications including message boards, forums and registration forms, which puts websites of every kind right in the firing line.  With many web applications virtually unprotected, it’s easy for hackers to deface or shut down the website, or else manipulate the applications to reveal sensitive data.

For web host providers all it takes is one customer website to be breached and the whole server, with thousands of hosting customers, can be wide open.’

The traditional approach to application vulnerabilities is to scan programs and patch the weaknesses.  ‘Naturally, hosting companies cannot be expected to scan and patch vulnerabilities in their customers’

applications,’ says Sherban. ‘The good news is that security technology has advanced to the point where attack monitors and specialized web application firewalls can be deployed within minutes, and the additional security is provided to customers as a value added service.’

Sherban goes on to say: ‘What makes this new technology special is that it detects and intercepts suspicious traffic before it gets to the customer’s site, potentially preventing an attack that would otherwise lead to a damaging breach.’

Applicure’s web application firewall solution: Applicure’s dotDefender v3.2 is a security software solution for web applications which provides advanced protection against external and internal hacking.  dotDefender provides high strength protection against SQL injection, cross-site scripting, path traversal, and many other application attacks.  Free download of Applicure’s attack monitoring tool, dotDefender Monitor, and free 30 trial of dotDefender are available at www.applicure.com.

After a successful year, shared hosting service provider HostGator shared its good fortune by giving gifts to fight cancer and to promote education in underdeveloped countries. The company gave $100,000 to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, and $25,000 to One Laptop per Child. The gifts were decided upon by HostGator management and staff.

(MyHostNews.com) After another year of growth and rising revenues, HostGator decided to celebrate its good fortune by sharing with others, making significant contributions to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, and to the international organization, One Laptop Per Child.

The Anderson Cancer Center received a gift of $100,000 and One Laptop per Child received $25,000.

“The gift to Anderson reflected a mix of the wishes of the staff here at HostGator and suggestions from our users,” says HostGator president Brent Oxley. “It’s pretty hard to find anybody whose life hasn’t been touched in some way — directly or indirectly — by cancer. We gave to them, partly because we’re located in Houston and some of our employees have had family members treated there, but mostly we gave because of their amazing country-wide reputation for treating patients and researching cancer cures.”

The gift to One Laptop per Child was another easy decision, says Oxley: “If it wasn’t for the internet and computers we wouldn’t be in business. If just one of the kids can further their knowledge in computers and make a career out of it, in some shape or form, it will have been worth every penny.”

The goal of One Laptop per Child is spelled out in its name: to improve the educational opportunities for children in underdeveloped regions by giving every child access to an inexpensive, durable, web-capable laptop. At $100 each, the gift from HostGator should provide at least 250 laptops.

At Anderson, one of the country’s largest cancer treatment centers, HostGator’s gift will go to support a variety of programs — from research and clinical trials, to education, counseling and treatments.

Oxley says as HostGator continues to grow and earn profits, it will continue increasing the amount of its annual gifts.

“As a company, we expect to go on making charitable donations, and letting our people decide each year where our gifts should go,” says Oxley. “We want the benefits of our success to go beyond our own narrow interests, so that’s why we’ll keep on doing it. Some other companies may donate for ‘political’ reasons, not because they really want to help — but that’s still good. Whatever the motives and whatever the amounts given, it all helps. The more corporate giving there is, the better.”

About HostGator
Host Gator is a provider of shared, dedicated and reseller Web hosting services focused on the consumer and small business markets. Founded in 2002, Host Gator has become a leader in reseller hosting, currently hosting over 700,000 domains and helping over 15,000 businesses become Web hosting companies.

Suggested fee change would effectively eliminate tasting

(Web Hosting News) The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is looking to effectively end domain tasting with a proposal to start charging the annual ICANN fee on registrar domain registrations.

Domain tasting is the use of the Add Grace Period to test the profitability of a domain name registration. The AGP is a five-day period following the initial registration of a domain name when the registration may be deleted and a credit can be issued to a registrar.

“Domain tasting has been an issue for the Internet community and ICANN is offering this proposal as a way to stop tasting,” said Dr Paul Twomey, ICANN’s President and CEO. “Charging the ICANN fee as soon as a domain name is registered would close the loophole used by tasters to test a domain name’s profitability for free.”

AGP was originally introduced by registries so registrars could avoid costs if a domain name was mistyped or misspelled during the registration process. It is part of the .com, .net, .org, .info, .name, .pro, and .biz registry contracts.

Tasting has been a serious challenge for the Internet community and has grown exponentially since 2004. In January 2007 the top 10 domain tasters accounted for 95% of all deleted .com and .net domain names - or 45,450,897 domain names out of 47,824,131 total deletes.

The proposal will be part of the ICANN budget process for the fiscal year starting 1 July 2008. The early draft version of that budget will be released for and discussed at ICANN’s New Delhi meeting later this month. After public discussions of this proposal and other budget issues, the proposed budget will be released for addition discussions by 17 May 2008 and be voted on at the board meeting to be held during the ICANN meeting in Paris in June. ICANN accredited registrars representing two-thirds of fees collected will be asked to approve the proposal.

“This idea came from the ICANN community and we think it is a viable solution the Internet community has been seeking,” Dr Twomey added.

About ICANN:
ICANN is responsible for the global coordination of the Internet’s system of unique identifiers like domain names (like .org, .museum and country codes like .uk) and the addresses used in a variety of Internet protocols that help computers reach each other over the Internet. Careful management of these resources is vital to the Internet’s operation, so ICANN’s global stakeholders meet regularly to develop policies that ensure the Internet’s ongoing security and stability. ICANN is an internationally organized, public benefit non-profit company. For more information please visit: www.icann.org.
